Hare image selected for 155th Royal Photographic Society International Print Exhibition
19th April 2012
Richard Nicoll's image of a Brown Hare sitting on a frosty day with frost on its whiskers and fur has been accepted into the 155th Royal Photographic Society International Print Exhibition. This image is one of only 123 prints selected from 2800 images entered by 747 photographers from across the world. The exhibition will tour the UK and abroad for the next year starting in London in July 2012.
Common Cuckoos Fighting 2 & Gannets Mating Highly Commended at EAF Exhibition 2012

Richard Nicoll's image of two male cuckoos fighting has been Highly Commended at the East Anglia Federation 2012 Exhibition.

In addition Richard's image of two gannets mating was Highly Commended, scored maximum marks and was selected to represent the EAF.

Kestrel mobbing Short-eared Owl Image wins PAGB Gold at 30th Rushden Exhibition

Richard Nicoll's image of a Kestrel mobbing a Short-eared Owl carrying a rodent has been awarded "Best Wildlife entry of the exhibition" - PAGB Gold Medal at the 30th Rushden Open Photographic Exhibition 2012.

In addition Richard's image of two male Cuckoos fighting was awarded a BPE Ribbon at the same national exhibition.
Hare Running Image gains Honourable Mention at Bristol International Salon of Photography 2012

Richard Nicoll's image of a brown hare running in the snow has been awarded an Honourable Mention after receiving full marks at the Bristol International Salon of Photography 2012.

Three more of Richard's images were also accepted into the exhibition.
Richard Nicoll gains Associateship in Natural History from the RPS

Richard has been awarded an Associateship in Natural History by the Royal Photographic Society after presenting a panel of 15 prints at an assessment day held at the RPS headquarters in Bath on the 28th of March 2012.

The RPS retained the panel to use as an example on future Natural History Associateship advisory days.

National Trust Publishes Article about Richard Nicoll's Photography

Wicken Fen National Trust property has licensed several images and published an article about Richard's photography in the spring edition of its Newsletter. The Newsletter is distributed to premises in the surrounding area of Cambridgeshire and available at the Wicken Fen visitor center.

Common Cuckoos Fighting 2 wins Selectors Award at EAF Print Championship 2012

Richard's image of two male cuckoos having a mid-air battle has been picked by judge Paul Keene for a Selector's Award at the East Anglia Federation Club Print Championship 2012. This is one of only 4 individual awards presented at the championship where 25 clubs from across the East Anglia region were competing for the title.
Common Cuckoos Fighting 2 wins Best Projected Image at Brotherhoods Cup 2012

Richard's image of two male Cuckoos having a mid air battle has been chosen as the best projected image at the annual Brotherhoods Cup (hosted by Peterborough Photographic Society) helping Ely Photographic Club to 4th place overall.
Fulmar image wins SCC Medal at 99th Southampton International Exhibition - 2012

Richard's image of a Fulmar soaring (taken near Bousta on Shetland) has been awarded a Southampton Camera Club Medal at the 99th Southampton International Exhibition - 2012.
Kestrel mobbing Short-eared Owl Image awarded Honourable Mention

Richard's image of a Kestrel trying to rob a Short-eared Owl of a rodent has been given an Honourable Mention by the Carlisle International Exhibition of Photography 2012.

This image took many weeks of field work to find where this behaviour might take place and to then to capture it in camera.
Brown Hare wins Gold Medal at West Cumbria International Exhibition of Photography 2012

Richard's image of a Brown Hare sitting in the frost has won the Photographic Society of America Gold Medal - Best in Show at the West Cumbria International Exhibition of Photography.

In addition this image also won a GBSPC (Great British Small Print Circuit) Award at both the Carlisle International Exhibition of Photography 2012 and the Hoylake International Exhibition of Photography 2012. It also was awarded an Honorable Mention at the Arddangosfa / Exhibition of Photography 2012.
Common Cuckoos Fighting 2 Scores Full Marks at St Ives Interprint 2012

The PAGB patronized annual St. Ives Interprint competition was held today.

Richard's image of cuckoos fighting was awarded full marks by the judge, Rosemary Wilman Hon.FRPS, AFIAB, BPE*5, helping Ely Photographic Club to 3rd place overall.

Cambridge Evening News publishes Hen Harrier Image

The Cambridge Evening News has published a Hen Harrier image taken at Wicken Fen on the 8th of March 2011 as part of an article about these rare birds of prey in the edition published on 4th of February 2012.



Hen Harriers have been roosting on Wicken's Sedge Fen for many years during the winter months. They come in to roost just as it is starting to get dark and leave again shortly before the sun rises. At least 6 have been seen there this winter, including a male.

A selection of Richard's images (including many taken at Wicken Fen) have gone on sale at the National Trust's visitor centre shop at Wicken Fen. These include the image of the Short-eared Owl featured on BBC Autumnwatch Unsprung on 2011-11-11 and the Brown Hare which won an award at The Wrekin Salon 2011.

BBC Autumnwatch shows Short-eared Owl Image live
11th November 2011
The BBCs Autumnwatch Unsprung programme featured a flight image of a Short-eared Owl flying directly towards the camera. This image was taken at the National Trusts Wicken Fen in Cambridgeshire.


Another image of a Short-eared Owl hunting has also been featured on the BBCs "red button" service.
